Biolan has been a leader in sustainable gardening and environmental solutions for over 50 years. Our journey began in 1974 when our founder, Hannes Kariniemi, discovered a way to turn chicken manure into effective garden fertilizer. This innovative idea laid the foundation for Biolan, and since then, we have remained committed to the principles of sustainability and circular economy.

Important Moments in Biolan’s History:
-1974: Biolan was founded to tackle the environmental problem of manure accumulation on broiler farms. Our first product, chicken manure pellets, quickly became popular among Finnish gardeners, marking the start of our commitment to sustainable solutions.
-1978: Biolan introduced Finland’s first composter, the “Kompostori,” which allowed households to recycle organic waste into valuable compost. This product not only gained widespread popularity but also solidified Biolan’s reputation as a leader in sustainable gardening. Over the years, our range of composters has expanded to meet the diverse needs of households, from urban settings to rural cottages.
-1980s: Recognizing the need for eco-friendly sanitation solutions, Biolan developed the first dry toilet, providing a sustainable and odor-free alternative to traditional outhouses. This dry toilet became a staple in Finnish cottages, allowing users to manage waste in an environmentally friendly manner without the need for water or chemicals.
-2012: We entered a new era of production with the opening of a modern facility for manufacturing composters and dry toilets. This factory, which remains highly advanced, was designed with sustainability and eco-friendliness in mind. A key development in this process was the completion of Biolan’s own 500-kilowatt wind turbine, which began producing renewable energy for the composter factory.
– 2017: we transformed the roof of our factory into a solar power plant, installing 475 square meters of solar panels with a peak output of over 80 kW.
-2024: In response to Finland’s new waste law, which encourages composting and waste reduction, Biolan invested €1.5 million in advanced robotics and technology, doubling the production capacity of our composters and dry toilets. This move underscores our commitment to meeting growing demand while continuing to innovate and lead in the sustainability space.
